NXTBook Media Offering Kindle Support

Nxtbook Media, a company that specializes in optimizing how print magazines are consumed online, announced on their blog that they are now offering Kindle support for all their magazines.

Nxtbook Media is proud to be the first digital magazine producer to provide content on the Amazon Kindle, the most successful e-Ink device to date. Publishers using the Nxtbook Media platform will now have the ability to have their content viewed on a device that continues to gather support both online and from personalities like Oprah Winfrey.

Digital magazines can be accessed from the Kindle via the device’s integrated browser. Though users will find this feature on the Kindle’s “Experimental” menu, reading the Nxtbook is no different than reading a book on the device.

“Rather than serving up oversized pages and artwork to a device which lacks color and brilliant resolution, users of the Kindle will receive a modified version of Nxtbook Liberty, our text-based solution which has been developed for screen readers and mobile devices,” says Marketing Director Marcus Grimm. “Developing a Kindle-specific version was a natural extension of a product that’s designed to take magazine content to new places. Though it would’ve been just as easy to serve up magazines in their original format, the text version delivers content in a manner which the intended audience has already pledged their approval of.

This is an interesting use of the experimental web browsing feature of the Kindle.  The Kindle already allows you the option of subscribing to multiple magazines for a fee.  This system seems to bypass the fee entirely by using the browser.

I’ve been a kindle owner for 5 months now and have never used the browser.  The connection, I imagine, is very slow and the lack of color must be painful.  Does this mean that NxtBook Media is on the wrong path?  Not at all.  Remember that the Kindle is a generation 1 device.  Soon enough, we will see a color screen, wifi connection, increased memory, etc.  At that point, it arguable becomes just as powerful as the iphone….think about it.  So NxtBook Media is laying the foundations now to be prepared for future generations.

Very smart.

Below is a video the produced to explain how their system works.
